A furnace is the heart of a Kentucky home in winter. When it starts to fail, the warning signs are usually there long before the system quits on the coldest night of the year. Knowing what to look for can save you from an emergency replacement and thousands of dollars in damage.

1. Your furnace is 15+ years old

Most gas furnaces last 15–20 years. Past that, efficiency drops sharply and parts get harder to source. If yours is approaching that age, plan a replacement on your timeline—not the furnace's.

2. Heating bills keep climbing

If your gas bill is rising faster than the rate increases, your furnace is losing efficiency. A new 96% AFUE furnace can cut heating costs by 20–40% compared to an aging 80% unit.

3. Frequent or expensive repairs

A good rule: if the repair quote is more than 50% of the cost of a new system, replace it. Heat exchangers, control boards, and inducer motors are the most common big-ticket failures.

4. Uneven heating room to room

Cold bedrooms and a roasting living room often point to a furnace that can no longer move enough air or maintain its rated output. Modern variable-speed systems solve this almost overnight.
